In both cases, the precise kind of monster or the precise kind of product is left unspecified, and there is nothing saying the player or his character makes the choice. "Convert raw materials into products of the same material" specifies only that there be products of the same material. "Choose one of the following options" lists varying numbers of monsters. With this the player is locked into only selecting the option, they don't get to dictate the contents of those options.I'm still not following. This is contrasted with the conjure spells which use the phrase: "Choose one of the following options for what appears" which is followed by a series of # of monsters at CR X or less. That's literally an open ended invitation for the player. How do you read the ambiguity of what the product, specifically, is in fabricate to leave it as a choice to the caster's player, while the ambiguity of what creature precisely is summoned does not leave that choice similarly to the player?įrom the line about choosing to convert raw materials into products of the same material. My question is a consistency question, not a "how should this be run" question. And that probably is exactly what's intended with fabricate. Conjure stuff is a bit different since you can at a minimum chose between a bunch of weaker monsters or a few stronger ones, but to say that "conjure fey" summons a rat because the dm decided on a "fey spirit in the form of a beast with cr 6 or less" is just dumb.Obviously. BUT if you really want to intentionally be a bad dm, feel free to say players simply cast their spells for no determinable end or purpose. it's kind of disincentive people from playing in your games, tbh. Personally i think a player should have some agency as to what they do when they cast fabricate why should i blow a 4th level spell slot to make a lamp when i wanted a chest piece? i even went out of my way to take a feat for proficiency in the artisan's tools necessary.
